Mississippi Aquarium releases 28 rehabilitated Kemp’s ridley sea turtles

GULFPORT — Mississippi Aquarium said it cleared 28 Kemp’s ridley sea turtles for release into the Gulf after months of rehabilitation.

The release was scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, the aquarium said. The turtles arrived in November after suffering from cold-stunning, a condition that can occur when sea turtles are exposed to rapidly dropping water temperatures.

Aquarium staff said the turtles spent several months in rehabilitation before being deemed healthy enough to return to the wild. Officials said each release highlights the impact of the aquarium’s rehabilitation efforts and the support of its Rehab Hero Program.

Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are among the world’s most endangered sea turtles, and rescue and rehabilitation programs aim to stabilize animals and return them to coastal habitats. Mississippi Aquarium encouraged the public to learn more about its sea turtle rehabilitation work and to participate in related events. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
