Mississippi agencies aid recovery after Winter Storm Fern
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said volunteer groups continue working across the state to help survivors recover from Winter Storm Fern, and that federal public assistance has been approved for 38 counties impacted by the Jan. 23-27 severe winter weather.
The agency said 34 counties have been approved for all Public Assistance categories A through G, including Adams, Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun and Carroll. The approvals allow eligible communities to seek reimbursement for recovery costs, the agency said.
Volunteer organizations assisting in recovery include Convoy of Hope, Samaritan’s Purse, Mennonite volunteer electricians, faith-based rebuilding groups and Long-Term Recovery Committees where they exist, the agency said. Residents who still need assistance are urged to contact their local county Emergency Management Director for direction and help.
Mississippi EMA also directed residents to its “January 2026 Winter Weather” webpage for more information. Public Assistance is a federal grant program, administered with state partners, that typically helps cover debris removal, emergency protective measures and repair of public infrastructure. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
