MEMA warns of space heater risks as temperatures drop into teens
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to follow basic safety steps when using space heaters as temperatures fall into the teens and, in some places, the single digits.
MEMA said in a Facebook post that people should place heaters on a solid, flat surface, keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn, check cords and plugs for cracks or damage, and plug heaters directly into wall outlets rather than using extension cords or power strips.
The agency also reminded Mississippians to check in on family, friends and neighbors during the cold snap. MEMA, which coordinates the state’s disaster response and issues public safety guidance, frequently posts preparedness information before and during hazardous weather.
Cold overnight temperatures increase the risk of fire and hypothermia for vulnerable populations, including older adults and people without adequate heating. Officials recommend following manufacturer instructions for portable heaters and exercising caution indoors to reduce fire hazards. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
