MEMA continues winter storm response after 29th death

JACKSON, Miss. — Feb. 6, 2026 — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Friday that it and federal, state and local partners continue to respond to severe winter weather affecting the state, and that another death has been reported in Desoto County, bringing the statewide total to 29.

The agency said hundreds of volunteers, faith-based organizations and private-sector partners are involved in ongoing response and recovery efforts. The update was posted on the agency’s social media channels.

MEMA is the state agency responsible for coordinating disaster preparation, response and recovery. In events such as widespread winter storms, that role typically includes working with officials and community groups to support shelters, distribute supplies and restore critical services, MEMA said in its update.

The fatality count underscores the seriousness of the storm’s impact on communities across Mississippi and the continued need for coordinated relief efforts. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
