Inmate found dead at Alcorn County Jail; state investigators called
ALCORN COUNTY, Mississippi — On Feb. 17, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., Alcorn County Jail staff discovered an inmate unresponsive during routine cell checks, officials said. Staff performed CPR and summoned medical assistance, and Magnolia EMS later pronounced the inmate dead, the jail said in a Facebook post.
Alcorn County deputies and investigators secured the area, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct an independent inquiry, officials said. The involvement of the state bureau follows standard practice for custodial deaths in the state.
The Alcorn County coroner will transport the individual to the state crime lab for an autopsy to determine cause of death, officials said. The Facebook post did not identify the inmate or provide further details about the circumstances leading to the discovery.
The investigation remains active. Officials have not released a timeline for the autopsy results. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
