Hinds County warns of dangerous cold, strong winds

Hinds County Emergency Operations Center said residents should prepare for dangerous cold temperatures and strong winds beginning tonight and continuing through Saturday afternoon, with cold conditions lingering into Sunday morning.

The agency said temperatures will fall below freezing early Saturday, with sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Wind chills are expected near or below 5°F, with isolated areas approaching 0°F, and daytime highs will remain below freezing. Officials warned that strong winds could topple trees weakened by a recent ice storm and complicate ongoing power restoration efforts.

Hinds County is under an Extreme Cold Warning from 3 a.m. through 6 p.m. Saturday and a Cold Weather Advisory from 6 p.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday, the post said. The EOC urged residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, secure loose outdoor items, use space heaters safely, drip faucets and protect exposed pipes, and exercise caution when traveling — particularly in high-profile vehicles.

For updates the agency directed residents to its social media channels and to sign up for ALERT Hinds County emergency notifications. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
