Gulfport man flees, strikes patrol car; police arrest him
Gulfport police arrested 58-year-old Roy Rodney Robinson on May 17 after officers say he fled a traffic stop and struck a patrol vehicle during a high-speed encounter in Gulfport, Mississippi.
The Gulfport Police Department said officers observed a vehicle connected to a recent vehicle burglary about 6:17 p.m. in the area of 34th Street near 13th Avenue and initiated a traffic stop. Police said Robinson accelerated, traveled at a high rate of speed, disregarded multiple traffic control devices and drove recklessly.
Police said Robinson approached 34th Street near Jody Nelson Drive, where an officer was positioned off the roadway preparing to deploy spike strips. Robinson braked and steered the vehicle toward the officer, struck a curb, then put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated into the front end of a patrol vehicle. Robinson and a passenger were taken into custody and transported to the Gulfport Police Department.
Police said both individuals had active felony warrants out of Missouri. Robinson was processed and transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center and is being held on a $175,000 bond. The passenger is being held without bond pending extradition, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
