Fatal crash on Industrial Park Road kills one
LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded Wednesday, Feb. 18, about 3 p.m. to a fatal traffic crash on Industrial Park Road involving a street sweeper and an 18-wheeler, the sheriff’s office said.
Preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the street sweeper was fatally injured in the collision. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries, the agency said.
Emergency responders and crash investigators remained on scene for several hours to conduct a thorough investigation and to clear the roadway. Industrial Park Road was temporarily affected while crews worked to remove vehicles and debris. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this difficult time,” said Sheriff Eddie Hawkins. “We ask motorists to remain cautious and attentive, especially around commercial and maintenance vehicles operating on our roadways.”
Street sweepers are municipal or commercial vehicles used to remove debris from roadways; collisions involving large commercial vehicles can present complex hazards and often require extended scene work. The crash remains under investigation, and officials encouraged anyone with information to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
