Citizens Police Academy rides with officers at Landers Center

Southaven Police Department said this week its Citizens Police Academy class met at the Landers Center and had the opportunity to ride with officers on four obstacle courses as part of defensive driving training.

The department said there are strict guidelines for becoming a defensive driving instructor. Captain Smorowski has taught the course since 2007 and is listed as one of the instructors along with Officer Burnham.

Lieutenant Bramlett and Officer Channell are in the process of becoming instructors, the department said. The two recently participated in a weeklong class in Oklahoma and are scheduled to return this summer to complete instructor training.

The department said all officers must drive and pass the course each year as part of ongoing training requirements. Citizens Police Academy programs typically give community members an overview of police operations and training, including hands-on demonstrations and ride-alongs.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
