Chief Sims leads NOBLE meeting at State Capitol

Chief Hardy Sims met with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives at the State Capitol Wednesday to discuss needed changes for first responders under the Public Employees Retirement System’s new Tier 5, the Hattiesburg Police Department said in a Facebook post.

Sims, who serves as president of NOBLE’s Mississippi chapter, helped lead the discussion, the post said. “PERS serves as the cornerstone of retirement security for our public employees,” Sims said. “It’s not merely a financial mechanism; it represents our commitment to the men and women who dedicate their careers to serving our state.”

The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives is a national group of law enforcement leaders that advocates on policy and professional issues affecting officers and communities. The Public Employees Retirement System, or PERS, provides retirement benefits for public-sector workers and has drawn attention from first responders over changes tied to the newly established Tier 5.

The Hattiesburg Police Department thanked its local legislative delegation for supporting proposed Tier 5 changes that the department says would benefit first responders. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
