29-year-old arrested after breaking into Planet Fitness, held on $300,000 bond
JPD Precinct 2 officers arrested 29-year-old Kervin Smith on Feb. 5 after he broke into the Planet Fitness on Robinson Road in the Westland Plaza Shopping Mall, the precinct said in a Facebook post.
Smith was charged with commercial burglary and appeared in Municipal Court on Feb. 6, where he received a $300,000 bond, the post said.
Commercial burglary typically involves unlawful entry into a business to commit theft or another crime. Planet Fitness is a national gym chain with thousands of locations and often operates in shopping centers and plazas that rely on regular customer traffic and overnight security.
The arrest underscores concerns about property security for businesses in shopping centers and the role local police precincts play in responding to after-hours break-ins. Municipal court hearings commonly address charges and set bond amounts that determine whether a defendant can be released pending further proceedings.
Details in the precinct’s post were limited. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
