VA medical center marks Thank a Resident Day, highlights resident role

JACKSON — The G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center recognized “Thank a Resident Day” and urged patients and staff to show appreciation for resident physicians who care for veterans while completing medical training, the center said in a social media post.

The medical center said resident physicians are doctors in training who work long shifts, manage complex cases and provide care with compassion and focus. The post highlighted the Department of Veterans Affairs’ role in training the nation’s health care workforce.

According to the post, the VA is the largest provider of health professions training in the United States, training more than 120,000 health professionals each year, including about 40,000 resident physicians. The center said nearly 70% of U.S. physicians complete part of their training at a VA facility during their careers, meaning many community health care providers have trained in the VA system.

Officials said supporting VA training programs helps not only today’s veterans but also the future of health care nationwide. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
