University closes through Feb. 1 after ice storm
The University of Mississippi said it will remain closed through Sunday, Feb. 1, canceling classes and activities as crews continue response and recovery after an ice storm.
“Safety remains the university’s top priority,” the university said in a Facebook post, noting that some roads in the region are closed because of stranded commercial vehicles and motorists and that travel conditions remain extremely hazardous. The post advised the campus community to check weather and road conditions and referenced free resources from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
Power has been restored to nearly 100% of the campus, the university said. Officials said master-lease and off-campus housing are on the City of Oxford grid and that timelines for any remaining restorations will be shared as they become available. Power has been restored to Campus Walk and most units at The Quarters, but some off-campus housing may experience water interruptions while city crews troubleshoot and repair lines.
Facilities Management is responding to flooding caused by frozen pipes and heating and cooling coils as temperatures change, the post said, adding crews are monitoring issues in more than 10 buildings. Dining services include Rebel Market open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., G&G’s Fry Co. open 2-6 p.m. on Business Row, and anticipated Provisions on Demand locations in Stockard-Martin and Crosby halls pending food deliveries.
The university said Gov. Tate Reeves signed Executive Order 1593 to activate the Mississippi National Guard to assist with logistics and delivering resources; National Guardsmen have arrived in Lafayette County and are coordinating with local emergency agencies. Officials urged people to check on neighbors, share resources through local churches and relief groups, and stay safe.
