Oxford officers read to students for Read Across America Day

Officers with the Oxford Police Department visited classrooms at Lafayette Elementary in Oxford last week to take part in Read Across America Day, the department said on Facebook.

The department said officers spent time reading with students as part of a week of activities celebrating books, imagination and learning. The post said events like the classroom visits give officers a chance to step out from behind the badge and connect with young people in a different setting.

The department thanked the Lafayette County School District and the teachers and staff at Lafayette Elementary for welcoming the officers. Read Across America Day is an annual reading awareness and celebration program sponsored by the National Education Association aimed at promoting literacy and a love of reading among children.

Police visits to schools are a common community policing activity intended to build relationships between law enforcement and residents from an early age. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
