Ole Miss closes campus through Feb. 1 after icy conditions

The University of Mississippi closed its campus through Sunday, Feb. 1, citing safety risks from fluctuating temperatures that could cause ice to loosen and fall from buildings, trees and power lines, the university said in a Facebook post.

The university said safety remains its top priority and warned people to avoid walking or standing near building overhangs, roofs, trees and power lines where ice may be present. Officials urged extra caution when entering or exiting buildings and advised people to watch for hazardous road conditions and black ice on sidewalks.

Power has been restored to more than 90 percent of the campus, including all on-campus residence halls, the post said. The university said master-lease and off-campus housing locations are on the City of Oxford electrical grid and staff are working to determine timelines for any remaining restorations. Power has been restored to The Quarters, the post added.

Dining updates include a food truck at Minor Hall and an anticipated opening of P.O.D.s (Provisions on Demand) on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Stockard-Martin and Crosby halls once deliveries arrive. Rebel Market remains open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Ole Miss women’s basketball game against Vanderbilt has been moved to Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m., and the game against Auburn will move to Monday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. at SJB Pavilion.

The university established a nonemergency call center at 662-915-7211, open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and asked followers to monitor @OleMiss for updates. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
