Mississippi middle-class incomes outpace cost-of-living increases
A Facebook post says Mississippi was one of two states where middle-class incomes outpaced cost-of-living increases by at least 10 percent, and that the state recorded one of the largest income gains in the nation.
The post summed up the trend with the line, “Paychecks grew faster than the bills,” and added, “This is what momentum looks like!” The comments did not include additional supporting data or a source for the comparison.
If sustained, income growth that outpaces living costs can increase household purchasing power, reduce financial stress for middle-class families and boost local consumer spending, economists say. Mississippi has long faced economic challenges, including lower median incomes and higher poverty rates than many other states, so stronger income gains would mark a notable shift in the state’s economic picture.
Official measures of income and cost-of-living typically come from agencies such as the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics; the Facebook post did not cite such sources. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
