Truck Carrying Research Monkeys Overturns on I-59, Authorities Warn Public to Stay Away

Heidelberg, Miss. — October 28, 2025 — Authorities are warning residents to use extreme caution after a truck transporting rhesus monkeys from Tulane University to a testing facility in Florida overturned near mile marker 117 on Interstate 59, releasing several animals into the area.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the wreck occurred Tuesday afternoon, causing multiple monkeys—each weighing around 40 pounds—to escape from the vehicle. Officials say the animals are aggressive toward humans and may carry hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID-19, posing a serious public-health concern.

Emergency responders and wildlife officials were dispatched to the crash site to help locate and contain the monkeys. Residents and motorists near Heidelberg are urged not to approach, feed, or attempt to capture the animals and to call 911 immediately if any are spotted.

The Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Tulane University has been notified and plans to send a recovery team to the scene on Wednesday to assist in safely handling the monkeys. Authorities emphasized that the monkeys require protective gear (PPE) for safe handling, and if they move beyond the wreck area, they may need to be euthanized for safety reasons.

Officials say updates will be released as more information becomes available.
