Stolen Log Truck and Firearms Recovered in Adams County; Two Arrested
Natchez, MS – Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten announced the recovery of a stolen log truck, two firearms, and suspected narcotics following a joint effort between the Adams and Franklin County Sheriff’s Offices on the morning of August 8, 2025.
Deputies were called to assist after a white 1993 International log truck was reported stolen from the BP station at the intersection of Hwy 84 and Hwy 33 in Franklin County. The vehicle was last seen traveling south on Hwy 33 before turning west onto Liberty Road and entering Adams County.
Thanks to cooperation between both sheriff’s offices and information from a concerned citizen, the vehicle was found abandoned off a gravel road near New Hope Road in the Sandy Creek Wildlife Management Area. Deputies discovered the truck with its doors and compartments open. A loaded AR-15 rifle, a Taurus 9mm pistol, suspected illegal drugs, and a cellphone were located nearby.
Following an investigation, deputies arrested Christopher J. Payne (Black Male, DOB 09/08/1999) and Larry Stampley (Black Male, DOB 10/09/2002), both found in a wooded area near the recovery site. Each faces charges of Receiving, Possessing or Disposing of Stolen Property. Payne was also wanted on three outstanding warrants for Armed Robbery, Receiving Stolen Property, and False Pretense.
While no injuries were reported, one citizen reported that a shot was fired in his direction as he attempted to observe the truck’s location.
All firearms and narcotics recovered were secured as evidence, and the stolen truck has been returned to its rightful owner.
Sheriff Patten praised the efforts of law enforcement and local residents. “The quick coordination between agencies and the courage of our citizens helped bring this situation to a safe and successful end,” he said.
The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be filed. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Adams County Sheriff’s Office or Crimestoppers at 1-888-542-5000.
