MBI investigates officer-involved shooting in Brandon
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Brandon Police Department that occurred in the early morning hours on June 1 at a residence in the Crossgates neighborhood in Brandon. The standoff unfortunately turned fatal for an assisting officer from Madison and the suspect has also died.
MBI reports that officers received a call of a possible hostage situation. When they arrived on scene, the subject fired shots at officers. A Brandon police officer received significant injuries and has been transported to a local hospital. The involved subject remained barricaded inside the residence with unknown injuries at this time.
During the standoff and while attempting to enter the residence where the subject was barricaded, an officer from the Madison Police Department received fatal injuries. The subject also received fatal injuries.
WLBT-TV reports the incident took place on Terrapin Hill Road about 1:30 a.m., adding that the Brandon Police Department described it as a domestic dispute between a man and a woman.
It was reported the fatal victim was identified as Horren Randy Tyler, a seven-year veteran with Madison, who was a retired police chief in Ridgeland. A second officer with the Brandon Police Department also received “significant injuries,” but is listed in stable condition.
WLBT identified the suspect who died as Gabriel Matthew Wilson, age 22.
