Rankin County sheriff urges motorists to avoid roads near Leesburg after trees fall

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post that it has received multiple reports of trees down in the northern part of the county near Leesburg and is urging residents and motorists to avoid the identified areas.

The department said it will update the post when roadways are cleared. Officials did not provide further details on the number of trees, the cause of the damage or whether any injuries occurred.

Downed trees can block lanes, create traffic hazards and damage infrastructure such as power lines, complicating travel and emergency response. Local sheriff’s offices typically coordinate with public works and utility crews to clear roadways and restore services.

Motorists should use alternate routes, exercise caution and follow directions from law enforcement and emergency personnel.
