Toppers sweep Delta State behind clutch hitting, late rally

CLEVELAND, Miss. — Blue Mountain Christian’s softball team swept Delta State University in a Tuesday doubleheader, edging the Lady Statesmen 6-5 in the opener and rallying for a 7-6 walk-off in the nightcap.

In the first game, Mikaylah Fuqua tripled and later scored in the third inning, and Maryn Macri drove in Fuqua to give the Toppers a 2-1 lead. Karen Wisher added an RBI double in the fourth, and Neely Barrier delivered a two-RBI double in the sixth to push Blue Mountain Christian back in front. Delta State scored in the seventh, but Neely Cooper went the distance, pitching seven innings to secure the win.

The second game featured multiple momentum swings. Fuqua and Kelsey Camp had early RBI hits, and Vaye Savage lined a two-run double in the fourth. Down 6-3 in the sixth, the Toppers rallied as Savage hit a three-run homer to tie the game. The contest remained tied until the eighth, when Bre Ramsey scored on a wild pitch for the walk-off. Anna Harrison had four hits in the nightcap, Savage finished with four RBIs, and Gail Wisher worked 4.1 shutout innings in relief.

The sweep highlighted Blue Mountain Christian’s timely hitting, aggressive baserunning and bullpen depth. The Toppers travel to Crowley’s Ridge College on Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. for their next game. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
