Toppers lose opener, tie nightcap after extra innings

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Blue Mountain Christian’s softball team lost the opener 9-8 to NCAA Division II Christian Brothers and played to a 6-6 tie in the nightcap that was called after eight innings because of darkness on Tuesday, the school said.

Game one featured multiple momentum swings. Christian Brothers scored first, but the Toppers answered in the second when Aspen Teague hit a solo home run and Bre Ramsey followed with a two-run homer to give Blue Mountain Christian a 3-1 lead. Christian Brothers tied the game and took a 5-3 lead before the Toppers rallied for five runs in the sixth, keyed by Anna Harrison and an RBI single from Mikaylah Fuqua to make it 8-5.

The Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run, tied the game in the seventh and pushed across the winning run in the eighth. Teague finished with three hits and a homer, Kelsey Camp had two hits, Ramsey drove in two and Fuqua had two hits and an RBI. Neely Cooper worked the first 3.1 innings and Jana Shaw pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief.

In the nightcap, Harrison went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI as the Toppers built a 6-3 lead. Christian Brothers scored late to force extra innings, and the contest was called after eight innings because the field lacked lights. Gail Wisher pitched all seven innings, allowing six runs and striking out five. Blue Mountain Christian travels next to face Rhodes College on March 11. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
