Toppers drop first two games of SSAC series at Thomas
THOMASVILLE, Ga. — Blue Mountain Christian College fell in the first two games of its three-game SSAC series at Thomas University on Saturday, losing 9-2 in the opener and 5-2 in the nightcap.
Thomas jumped on the Toppers early in game one, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding a solo home run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Blue Mountain Christian cut the deficit in the third when Cody Presley drove in Jacob Bryant with an RBI single, and Yaidel Perez added an RBI single in the fifth after Jarrett Morris reached base.
Perez finished the opener 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Presley had an RBI, and Bryant reached base four times with three walks and a hit by pitch. Caleb Hall started and worked 4.2 innings with one strikeout, and Ryan Murphy relieved to finish the contest.
In game two, Thomas again scored early, plating four runs in the first and an additional run in the fourth. Jake Meilstrup led the Toppers at the plate in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run. Gates Gerhart delivered an RBI double in the seventh, and Perez added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Chris Matthews started game two, and Jack Hearn threw four scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts to keep the Toppers within reach. Blue Mountain Christian will try to even the series Sunday at Thomas at 1 p.m. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
