Blue Mountain splits doubleheader with Freed-Hardeman
Blue Mountain Christian University said Wednesday its softball team split a midweek doubleheader with Freed-Hardeman University at the BMCU Sportsplex in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, dropping the opener 4-1 before rallying for an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings in the nightcap. Both programs entered the matchup receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches Poll, the school said.
In game one, Freed-Hardeman opened with two runs in the first inning and added single runs in the fourth and fifth to secure the 4-1 decision. Blue Mountain answered early when Anna Harrison scored in the first, and the Toppers finished with five hits. Mikaylah Fuqua led the offense, going 2-for-3, and Gail Wisher threw a complete game, working seven innings, the release said.
The Toppers responded decisively in game two, plating two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third and a three-run fifth to end the contest under the run rule. Anna Harrison went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Laklyn Nichols had two hits and two runs, Neely Barrier drove in two runs, and Aspen Teague, Mikaylah Fuqua and Chloe Shelton also recorded RBIs as Blue Mountain finished with nine hits.
Bri Langley earned the win with a complete-game shutout over five innings, limiting Freed-Hardeman to two hits, the school said. Blue Mountain continues conference play Friday against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at 2 p.m. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
