Blue Mountain Christian sweeps Rust College in doubleheader

Holly Springs, Mississippi — Blue Mountain Christian University scored early and often Wednesday to sweep a doubleheader against Rust College, posting 30-4 and 9-4 wins, the school’s athletics department said.

In the opener the Toppers scored three in the first, five in the second and a 15-run fourth inning to break the game open before adding runs in the sixth and seventh for the 30-4 victory. Blue Mountain totaled 19 hits. Cody Presley went 3-for-6 with two home runs and seven RBIs, Jacob Bryant was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Jake Meilstrup had three hits and scored five runs, the release said.

On the mound, JD Klug earned the win, allowing one run over four innings while striking out three. Jack Hearn, Jesse Mellinger and Jabari Farr provided relief work to finish the game, the release said.

The Toppers carried momentum into the nightcap, building an early lead and holding off a Rust rally. Ross Polizzi went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, Hugh Parsons was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Presley and Bryant added key hits, the release said. Judson Griffin earned the win in relief and Jarrett Morris closed for the save.

Blue Mountain is scheduled to play University of Tennessee Southern on March 20 at 5 p.m., according to the team’s schedule. The Toppers will look to carry the midweek sweep into conference play.
