House passes HB 2, sends Mississippi Education Freedom Act to Senate

The Mississippi House of Representatives passed House Bill 2 on its final hurdle and sent the measure to the State Senate, a Facebook post celebrating the vote said.

The post praised House Speaker Jason White, Education Chairman Roberson and Rep. Jansen Owen for their work on the bill and thanked House Republicans who supported the measure. The post quoted the author as saying some members “voted like Republicans!!” and added, “HB 2 has passed in the Mississippi House of Representatives!”

The author said the bill, called the Mississippi Education Freedom Act, has drawn support from the White House, Gov. Tate Reeves, most statewide elected officials, faith-based organizations, business leaders and the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women. The post also invoked President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Linda McMahon, saying children across Mississippi need advocates in the Capitol.

The post noted more than four hours of debate in the House and commended lawmakers on both sides for civil discussion. It said the sponsors hope the State Senate will engage with the House as lawmakers work to expand education options for families. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
