Conservative accuses Hosemann, DeBar of killing GOP education priority

A critic in a Facebook post on Monday said longtime opposition to liberal policies and the Mississippi Democratic Party led to sharp disappointment after what the author called the killing of a Republican legislative priority.

“I have spent the last 23 years fighting the leftists, their liberal ideology, and the Mississippi Democratic Party’s philosophy that government knows best,” the post said. The author said Democrats do not want people empowered and credited conservative control of the Legislature beginning in 2011 for what has been called the “Mississippi Miracle,” an effort credited by supporters with improvements in state education outcomes.

The post singled out Lt. Gov. Hosemann and Sen. Dennis Debar, saying they “killed a Republican legislative priority shared by conservatives all across this country” and worked with Democrats to do so. The author also accused lawmakers of attempting to hide the move “on a deadline day,” and called the Senate Education Committee a place “where conservative priorities go to die.”

The Facebook post did not provide additional specifics about the measure or the vote. School funding and education policy have been contentious in Mississippi in recent years as lawmakers debate standards, funding and accountability. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
