Auditor lauds PEER report identifying state government waste
The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor said it welcomed action by the Legislature after the PEER Committee released a report yesterday analyzing ways to cut waste across state government, the office said in a Facebook post.
The post said the PEER analysis examined three issues the auditor’s office has raised for years: employee cell phone usage, state-owned vehicles and state agency office space.
On cell phones, the auditor’s office noted a 2022 report that it said showed state government spent “hundreds of thousands of dollars” on phones for employees that were never turned on.
The office said agencies could save significant taxpayer dollars by selling underused state-owned vehicles. It also said eliminating unused office space and canceling wasteful leases could save up to $6 million, according to the post.
The auditor’s office said it is willing to work with lawmakers and others on ways to reduce waste in state government. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
