School resumes Monday; drivers urged to follow bus safety laws
School resumes Monday, and drivers are reminded to follow traffic laws related to school bus safety, according to local authorities.
When a school bus stops to pick up or drop off students, vehicles traveling in both directions on two-lane or multi-lane roads without a median must stop. Drivers on divided roads with a median or barrier must stop if they are behind the bus. On the opposite side of the median, vehicles may proceed cautiously.
Drivers should stay at least 10 feet behind a stopped bus to give children enough space to safely enter or exit. Commuters along bus routes are advised to leave a few minutes early to avoid traffic delays.
Authorities urge drivers to watch for children and prioritize safety as the new school year begins.
