NWS Jackson upgrades parts of Mississippi to slight severe-weather risk

The National Weather Service office in Jackson has upgraded parts of Mississippi to a slight risk for severe weather for this afternoon into the evening, Feb. 26, 2026, the agency said. Damaging winds and golfball-sized hail are possible, and residents were urged to stay weather-aware during afternoon commutes.

The Jackson office said the change elevates the chance of organized storms across portions of the state but did not specify which counties in its initial message. The NWS uses categorical outlooks — including “marginal,” “slight,” “enhanced” and higher levels — to communicate the potential for hazardous weather and to help the public and emergency managers prepare.

Officials generally advise people in affected areas to monitor local forecasts, seek shelter if severe conditions develop and keep devices tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or official NWS social media for updates. Commuters and outdoor event planners should consider alternate arrangements if conditions deteriorate.

The National Weather Service is the federal agency responsible for weather warnings and forecasts across the United States, and its Jackson office issues warnings and outlooks for the region. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
