Mississippi thanks President Trump after emergency declaration approved

State officials thanked President Donald J. Trump for quickly approving an emergency declaration for direct federal assistance as freezing conditions affected northern Mississippi and a second wave was expected to move through later in the day, officials said in a Facebook post.

The post said “lots of frozen areas in the northern part of our state, with a second wave coming through this evening with even more potential impact in our central and southwest regions.” It concluded: “Stay safe, Mississippi… and thanks to President Trump!”

An emergency declaration allows federal agencies to provide direct assistance to state and local authorities. Such declarations typically open the door to federal funding, personnel and equipment that can help restore power, clear roads and support local emergency response efforts.

Officials did not provide further operational details in the post. Residents in affected areas are advised to follow guidance from local authorities and take precautions for freezing conditions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
