Mississippi cadets endure OC spray, defensive tactics training

Cadet Class 70 at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety underwent oleoresin capsicum, or OC, spray exposure and defensive tactics training, the agency said in a post on its official Facebook page. The post says 64 cadets participated in the training session on Monday night and included photos of the exercises.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Mississippi Highway Patrol and other statewide public safety functions, regularly conducts training to prepare officers for the demands of patrol and enforcement duties. OC spray exposure in a controlled setting helps trainees understand the effects of the agent and practice response and decontamination procedures.

Defensive tactics training typically covers physical control techniques, officer safety and ways to manage confrontations while minimizing harm. Such training aims to equip new officers with the skills and experience they will need in real-world situations.

The department said the work is challenging but necessary for the job the cadets are preparing to perform. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
