MEMA warns Mississippi of freezing rain, sleet and snow risk
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned Friday that most of Mississippi faces a significant risk of freezing rain, sleet or snow from Friday, Jan. 23 through Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026, citing an update from the National Weather Service. MEMA posted the advisory on its official Facebook page and urged residents to prepare.
The post said dangerously cold temperatures are expected to move into the state Friday night and persist into early next week. The agency encouraged people to check in on family members, secure property and start taking routine winter-preparedness steps.
MEMA coordinates the state’s response to emergencies and often relays National Weather Service forecasts and warnings to help communities prepare. Freezing precipitation and prolonged cold can create hazardous travel conditions, increase risk of power outages and pose health risks to vulnerable populations.
Officials advised residents to monitor local alerts and the latest forecasts as conditions change. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
