Lowndes County deputies identify porch pirate using social media and video

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a package theft in east Columbus, Mississippi, after a social media post alerted deputies to the incident.

The theft was first reported on Facebook, where residents shared details about a stolen package from a local residence. The post prompted an investigation by sheriff’s deputies.

Using Ring doorbell footage provided by the homeowner, deputies identified Jahem Hayden, 20, of Columbus, as the suspect. The video showed him taking the package from the porch, serving as key evidence in the case.

Sheriff Eddie Hawkins emphasized the importance of home security cameras and community cooperation. “This case shows how community involvement and technology can work together,” Hawkins said. “When citizens share information and video evidence, it helps us solve crimes and keep neighborhoods safe.”

Under Mississippi law, stealing mail or packages from an authorized delivery location is a felony offense. Charges will be determined after prosecutorial review.

The sheriff’s office encourages residents to report suspicious activity and share video footage that may assist in investigations. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
