Ice storm expected in Mississippi Friday through Sunday, MEMA warns
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is warning residents that an ice storm is expected beginning late Friday, Jan. 23, and lasting through Sunday, Jan. 25. MEMA said on its Facebook page that graphics from the National Weather Service indicate the state could see freezing rain and sleet, downed trees and power lines, dangerous and impassable road conditions, and wind chills below freezing and near 0 degrees in some areas.
MEMA, the state agency responsible for coordinating emergency response and preparedness, posted the graphics and urged residents to prepare now. The National Weather Service issues forecasts and watches that state and local agencies use to plan and communicate hazards to the public.
The agency directed people to msema.org for more information and tips on how to prepare. An ice storm of this type can produce numerous and prolonged power outages and hazardous travel conditions, increasing risks to motorists and people who rely on electrical-powered medical equipment.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and local officials for updates. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
