Extreme cold watch covers parts of Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi

An extreme cold watch is in effect from Sunday evening through Tuesday morning for portions of southeast Arkansas, northeast Louisiana and central and south Mississippi, a Facebook post warned.

The post said dangerously cold wind chills between 5 below and 10 above are possible, with air temperatures between zero and 15 above possible. It warned that frostbite and hypothermia can occur if unprotected skin is exposed and that an extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes.

An extreme cold watch alerts residents to prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions. Cold stress can quickly affect infants, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and those who work or sleep outdoors. Protecting vulnerable people and pets, dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors and insulating exposed pipes can reduce risks.

Local authorities and utility providers may issue additional advisories or precautions as the event approaches. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
