Advocates urge public to believe survivors as Sexual Assault Awareness Month begins
A Facebook post marking Start By Believing Day and the start of Sexual Assault Awareness Month urged people to listen to and support survivors of sexual assault, saying the way someone responds when a survivor shares their story can affect that person’s healing.
The post said when someone discloses sexual violence, people should “believe them,” “support them” and “stand with them.” It encouraged community members to listen without judgment, speak up against harm and be part of change.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month, observed each year to raise public understanding about sexual violence and to support survivors, aims to reduce stigma and encourage reporting and community support. Advocates say believing disclosures and offering compassionate practical help can remove barriers that survivors often face.
The post included hashtags such as #StartByBelieving, #SAAM and #SupportSurvivors to amplify the message. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
