National Unclaimed Property Day is Saturday

Jan. 31, 2025-The Mississippi State Treasury will be celebrating National Unclaimed Property Day on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about the state’s program to return millions of dollars to its rightful owners, the people of Mississippi.

“This cash belongs to you, not the government,” said McRae. “As a fiscal conservative, I understand it is my responsibility to get this money out of the government’s hands and back into yours as quickly as possible. That’s why our team has worked so hard to return it to Mississippians – and we won’t stop until every dollar is returned to its rightful owner.”

Treasurer David McRae returned a record-breaking $40 million to Mississippi residents in unclaimed money in 2024, adding up to a total of $125 million since taking office in 2020. Nationwide, nearly 33 million people have unclaimed money. The most common examples include an old electricity bill, a forgotten bank account, and a deceased relatives’s life insurance policy, but it is not limited to these examples.

There is millions of outstanding dollars to still be claimed at the Mississippi Treasury. To join us in celebration of National Unclaimed Property Day, search your name by visiting treasury.ms.gov/search.
