Mr. McRae Goes to Washington

By Treasurer David McRae

It’s a surreal experience to walk into the White House with a meeting on the books with our nation’s leaders. As I wandered through the historic arched doors this spring as part of a small group of state financial officers, I couldn’t help but be humbled by the fact that it wasn’t just me walking through those doors, but every family, business, and individual I represent in Mississippi.

As we gathered around an ornate table, surrounded by portraits of patriots, the conversation quickly turned to freedom and how to protect our citizens’ freedom of speech and commerce.

In recent years, many of these freedoms have been threatened by censorship, cancel culture, and (most relevantly to the State Treasury) debanking. If you aren’t familiar, debanking is a scheme used by large Wall Street institutions to impose their woke agenda on Main Street America, often prohibiting gun stores, energy companies, and conservative causes from accessing their banks or financing, making it all-but-impossible for these patriotic entities to do business.

It should come as no surprise that Mississippi’s community banks have not practiced debanking. Still, I have gotten increasingly involved in this issue to protect them from being pressured by woke Wall Street and defend area businesses who may not bank locally.

After all, the aggressive nature of debanking reaches almost every corner of society. In fact, the President’s own family has become a victim of this scheme. Earlier this year, President Trump was forced to take legal action to protect himself, First Lady Melania Trump, and his son, Barron Trump – all of whom have been the targets of debanking.

During the meeting, I assured White House leaders that Mississippi would continue to stand strongly against debanking schemes, while also maintaining our consistent opposition to any woke investment practices that push capital away from good and growing Mississippi businesses.

I am grateful to President Trump for his economic and his unrelenting fight for American freedoms. As your State Treasurer, I assure you that I will work alongside him and his administration to continue protecting Mississippi families, retirees, and businesses from woke Wall Street and any threat to the liberties we hold dear.

Thank you, as always, for the opportunity to represent your interests in Jackson and beyond. It is truly the honor of my lifetime.
