Mississippi Legislature Weekly Summary

Mississippi State Senate

In the third week of the 2025 Legislative Session, the Mississippi Senate met the Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, deadline for introduction of general bills and constitutional amendments.

Senators continued to hear agency funding requests in Appropriations subcommittee meetings.

The Senate on Monday, Jan. 20 passed Senate Resolution 7, urging Allen Media Broadcasting, of Los Angeles, California, to retain the in-house weather reporting services of WTVA, Channel 9 of Tupelo, as Allen Media Broadcasting has said it plans to dismiss WTVA’s meteorology team and use a remote weather reporting service provider. Senators said WTVA’s services were beneficial to the area. (Note: Allen Media Broadcasting announced late in the week it was reversing its decision and would retain the meteorologists on staff at WTVA.)

On Thursday, Jan. 23 the Senate Agriculture Committee met to discuss the state of Mississippi’s farm industry and its outlook, including projected crop production and solutions to help farmers become profitable and increase their numbers.

The Senate now faces a Feb. 4 deadline for committees to report general bills and constitutional amendments originating in the Senate.
