Great American Farmers Market celebration
Aug. 5, 2025 – The Mississippi Farmers Market will join a national celebration of agriculture this Saturday, Aug. 9, by hosting its first-ever Great American Farmers Market event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Held in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the event is part of the agency’s Great American Farmers Market initiative, a highlight of National Farmers Market Week and the ongoing America250 campaign marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The goal is to recognize the vital contributions of farmers, ranchers, and producers while strengthening ties between agriculture and local communities.
“Farmers markets are the backbone of local economies and community growth,” said Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson. “This event shines a light on the essential role of farmers and agriculture, which remains Mississippi’s largest industry. I invite everyone to come out and join us this Saturday to celebrate our rich agricultural heritage and our great nation’s upcoming anniversary.”
Saturday’s event promises more than just produce. Along with over 45 regular vendors offering fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, baked goods, flowers, and handcrafted items, the market will also host family-friendly activities, live demonstrations, and patriotic-themed entertainment.
Event highlights include:
- Specialty food vendors such as Frios Gourmet Pops of Metro Jackson offering handmade popsicles, and J&D Blueberry Farm of Poplarville selling blueberry lemonade, muffins, and more.
- A Kids’ Corner featuring face painting, chalk art, games, and a scavenger hunt with prizes.
- A live dish garden demonstration led by Green Oak Florist and Garden Center, teaching visitors how to create mini indoor gardens using the “thriller, filler, spiller” method.
- Educational exhibits from Master Gardeners and giveaways of popcorn, tote bags, and resources from the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, Mississippi Egg Marketing Board, and Genuine MS®.
- Appearances by several Mississippi agricultural royalty, including Miss Rodeo Mississippi Sierra Greene, Miss Dixie National Rodeo Harley Vinzant, and Miss Mississippi Watermelon Queen Kaelyn Hollingsworth.
The event is free and open to the public, with on-site parking available. The Mississippi Farmers Market is located at 929 High Street, adjacent to the Mississippi Fairgrounds in downtown Jackson.
