Winter storm batters Hinds County

A major winter storm is ongoing in Hinds County, bringing freezing rain and sleet that will continue until around noon, a Facebook post reported. The post said power outages are expected; 2,002 customers were without power at the time of the post.

The post listed current watches and warnings for Hinds County: an Ice Storm Warning from 3 p.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday and an Extreme Cold Warning from 6 p.m. Sunday to noon Tuesday.

Officials warned that dangerous travel conditions will continue into early this week and that dangerous cold temperatures will follow the storm into Monday evening. The post said the coldest readings are expected Monday night, with wind chills near or below 10°F and some areas near 0°F. Overnight lows could fall below 15°F and daytime highs are expected at or below 32°F.

Hinds County is in central Mississippi and includes Jackson, the state capital. Ice, sleet and prolonged subfreezing temperatures can down power lines, make roads impassable and raise risks to people without adequate heating.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
