University closes campus, opens warming shelter after Oxford ice storm
Chancellor Glenn F. Boyce announced that the university will be closed Monday, Jan. 26, and Tuesday, Jan. 27, as the region and the City of Oxford continue to experience significant impacts from an ice storm.
Boyce said the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff and the wider community remain the university’s highest priority. He credited university teams and statewide and local first responders for their work amid widespread power outages, downed trees, hazardous travel and damage to buildings, homes and neighborhoods.
Under the current conditions, the university is prioritizing support for students, including a warming shelter and dining services, Boyce said. He added that as conditions improve the university will focus on restoring operations safely, prioritizing essential services and student needs.
Boyce urged the community to heed advice from local authorities and exercise extreme caution while hazardous conditions persist. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
