Tyree Jones steps down as Jackson police chief
JACKSON — Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said Tuesday was his final day serving as chief of the Jackson Police Department, ending a seven-month stretch in which he held both leadership roles.
“Today is my final day serving as Chief of Police for the Jackson Police Department,” Jones said in a statement. He added that leading the department “during a critical transition period has been an honor,” and thanked Mayor John Horhn for his “trust, confidence, and support over the past seven months.”
Jones said serving in the dual role of sheriff and police chief has been a highlight of his 26-year law enforcement career and thanked his family for their support. “I want to thank my family for their unwavering support throughout this journey,” he said.
He praised officers and staff at both the Jackson Police Department and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for their “professionalism, dedication, and support in ensuring stability and continuity of operations.” Jones said he remains optimistic about Jackson’s future, will continue his work as sheriff and plans to support incoming Jackson Police Chief Dr. Rashell Brackney during the transition. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
