Tupelo man gets 25 years after guilty plea in 2023 killing

A Tupelo man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2023 death of Montavious Jemar Clifton, the First Circuit District Attorney’s Office said.

Prosecutors said Jaedin Jacques Hatchett entered the guilty plea Feb. 12. Circuit Court Judge John R. White sentenced Hatchett to 25 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections and ordered that he serve the full term with no eligibility for parole or early release, the district attorney’s office said.

The district attorney’s office said an additional 15 years were suspended and that Hatchett will be required to complete five years of post-release supervision after his prison term. Hatchett had been indicted on a second-degree murder charge in connection with Clifton’s death on March 5, 2023, the office said.

The case was investigated by the Tupelo Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Sadie Gardner, the office said. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
