Tornado warning expires for Prentiss, Tishomingo counties

A Facebook post said a tornado warning for Prentiss and Tishomingo counties in Mississippi expired at 10 p.m. CDT.

Tornado warnings are typically issued by the National Weather Service when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar and they call for immediate protective action by people in the warning area, the agency says. Warnings differ from watches, which signal that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form.

Prentiss and Tishomingo counties are located in northeastern Mississippi. Local tornado warnings can affect schools, businesses and travel, prompting emergency managers and media outlets to relay information quickly to residents.

Officials generally advise people in warning areas to seek shelter in a sturdy building, move to an interior room away from windows and monitor updates from local broadcasters or weather radios. Residents should follow guidance from local emergency management and the National Weather Service for safety instructions.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
