Tornado warning covers Pike, Walthall counties in Mississippi until 6:45 p.m. CDT

A tornado warning for Pike and Walthall counties in Mississippi is in effect until 6:45 p.m. Central Daylight Time, alerting residents in those counties to an immediate threat of severe wind and possible tornado development.

Tornado warnings are typically issued by the National Weather Service when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar and when there is imminent danger to life and property. A warning differs from a watch in that it calls for immediate protective action.

Residents in the affected counties are advised to take standard safety precautions: move to a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, avoid windows, and take shelter in a basement if one is available. Mobile homes and vehicles offer little protection from tornadoes, so people in those locations should move to a nearby sturdy structure if possible. Monitor local radio, television, or emergency alert systems for updates.

Pike and Walthall counties are located in southwestern Mississippi and include a mix of rural and small-town communities that can be particularly vulnerable to rapidly changing severe weather. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
