Starkville officer remains in critical condition after funeral escort crash

STARKVILLE, Mississippi — A Starkville Police Department motorcycle officer remains in critical condition after being injured in a crash while assisting a funeral procession, the department said in an update Sunday.

The department said the crash occurred Saturday, Feb. 21, at about 1:43 p.m. while the officer was assisting with a funeral procession escort. Police said the department motorcycle and another vehicle, which was not part of the procession, collided.

The officer suffered serious injuries and was flown to a medical facility in Jackson for treatment, the department said. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and declined medical treatment, police said.

In its Feb. 23 update, the department expressed gratitude for the “overwhelming support, prayers, and encouragement” from the local community, across Mississippi and from out of state, and asked the public to continue praying for the officer, the officer’s family and the Starkville Police Department.

The Starkville Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is conducting a full reconstruction of the crash, and the collision remains under investigation, the department said. Motorcycle units commonly provide traffic control and escort duties for public and funeral events. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
