Southaven Fire Department leads Citizens Public Academy with live-fire demonstration

The Southaven Fire Department presented Monday night’s Citizens Public Academy session, offering demonstrations, an apparatus tour and briefings on department operations, the department said.

Participants heard about the department’s history and growth and saw demonstrations of common emergency responses, the department said. Presenters discussed the range of incidents firefighters and paramedics handle, specialty roles within the department and community programs that provide fire and life safety information.

Crew members performed a simulated live-fire demonstration using training props and demonstrated how they would safely extinguish a vehicle fire during an actual emergency response, the department said. The practical demonstrations allowed attendees to observe tactics and safety procedures used by firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

The department thanked Malena Alderman, the department’s public fire and life safety educator and public information officer; Lt. Tyler Henley, training officer; and the Station 1 B-shift crew for their participation. The department also thanked El Agave Mexican Grill of Southaven for providing dinner. Citizens Public Academies typically aim to familiarize residents with local emergency services and safety practices. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
