Severe winter storm leaves 48,000 without power in Mississippi

State officials said severe winter weather continues to affect Mississippi, with about 48,000 outages remaining statewide as utility crews work to restore power. That number is down from a peak of roughly 180,000 outages, officials said.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said it has received reports from 51 counties indicating 337 homes, 24 businesses and 20 farms have been damaged, destroyed or otherwise affected. MEMA said 20 public roads have sustained major damage and 62 have sustained minor damage, and those figures are expected to fluctuate as assessments continue.

MEMA said 93 warming centers and shelters are open in 51 counties and are serving about 1,230 people. Officials urged residents without heat to use the centers and provided a list of locations at https://www.msema.org/get-assistance/disaster-resources/disasters/january-2026-winter-weather.

State officials said Mississippi has deployed requested personnel and resources to impacted counties; 41 counties have submitted 677 requests for assistance. The Mississippi Department of Transportation is performing winter weather treatments to the state system, and officials urged residents to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary and to monitor MDOT and Mississippi Department of Public Safety media alerts for the latest road-condition updates.

Officials thanked utility and road crews, volunteers, local emergency managers and emergency responders for their work helping communities recover. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
